How Alice was created
Alice In Wonderland story was created by an English, Author, Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson in 1865. The story was originally called Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland and was published under the pen name, Lewis Carroll.
Dodgson was the son of an Anglican Priest. He was mathematician and was very involved with the church activities. He got the inspiration of the character, Alice, from a 10 year old lovely child of his church colleague, Alice Pleasance Liddell and was later known as Alice Hargreaves after her marriage. On the left is a rare picture of Dodgson and Alice Liddell, the so call original Alice In Wonderland.
Dodgson first told stories of Alice to entertain his church colleagues, friends and children on 1862. The story received great response from the audience so much that they requested Dodgson to pen it down so they can read it whenever they like.
The first piece of written story of Alice was in 1862 and was believed to have been destroyed.
Original Story of Alice In Wonderland
Dodgson has created four versions of Alice In Wonderland stories. The most famous version revolves around Alice while on a picnic with her family, spotted a cute rabbit. She followed the rabbit to its rabbit hole and accidentally fell into the hole.
The rabbit hole transports Alice into the fantasy world of Wonderland where scores of things and characters come alive and her adventures begin. She encountered many obstacles and used solved them one by one with her simple and logic mind. She made many friends and some enemies in the course of her adventure.
Alice stumbles into many funny and entertaining characters such as The White Rabbit, The March Hare, The Hatter, The Cheshire Cat, The King of Hearts, the Queen of Hearts, the Knave of Hearts, Twiddledum, and Twiddledee.
Disneyland
Alice’s Adventures In Wonderland story was introduced to the American in 1869. The story hit big time when Disney bought over the right and turn it into a move in 1951.
Drawn from the wonderful source material of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland and Through the looking Glass, Disney brought all the amazing characters of The Mad Hatter, The White Rabbit, The Walrus and the Carpenter, Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the Queen of Hearts and The Cheshire Cat to life. It’s a crazy and wonderful film and is the closest any film has ever come to steeping inside the imagination of a child.
The movie was very well received by the audiences. The simple story was told over and over again in schools, parties and performed on stage.
Today, Alice In Wonderland novels and movies are evergreen story and Disney classics. It has huge fans and followers all over the world. And there is a huge demand for the costumes of Alice In Wonderland which has been increasing year by year.
Evolution of Alice In Wonderland Costumes
The original costume of Alice makes up of a full skirt with puffed sleeves and a pinafore apron attached to it. The dress is lined with lace.

Many people, including me, have the impression that Alice was wearing a blue and white colored costume. So was this illustration of Alice, gives the original costume of Alice or it wasn’t ?
Another school of thought is that Alice has a few costumes which include this one and another one with same design but in blue and white. Well, I find such acceptable to me. How are about you?

In the recent Alice In Wonderland 2010, Tim Burton gave his version of Alice costume (see left) which is very different with the traditional basic frocks worn by Alice in 1865.
The difference in both costumes is acceptable as Alice is a 19 year old girl in Tim Burton’s movie compared to a 13 year old in the previous movie versions.
